The HMRC Guidelines on R&D Tax Credits are an important area of study and reference for specialists. They are not a DIY guide to making an R&D claim. It takes a lot of time and experience to fully grasp them.
When inexperienced companies and accountants claim on their own they make errors:
- Underclaiming R&D relief.
- Completely misunderstand the guidelines. Leading to HMRC enquiry or the ticking time bomb of HMRC clawback.
- Fundamental calculation errors on over 50% of the tax returns we check. Which at best cost money or delay and at worse lead to enquiry.
We know about these because we are often called to help with the fall out through our enquiry service. Smart claimants use full service specialists.
We would caution against making a DIY R&D claim. Not everyone is cut out for DIY and it often goes wrong. Specialists save time and money.
If you are determined to do DIY we would recommend you don't use online only services that charge you a fee for doing very little other than providing an online form for you to attempt to understand and fill out.
HMRC have a FREE online form so why pay for one?
The HMRC Simple Guide and the HMRC R&D Guidelines known as CIRDs are good reference materials for determined DIY enthusiasts.
